The Hands Off movement is a nationwide mobilization against the actions of President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who are perceived as attempting to take control of various aspects of American life and government. The movement is organized to protest cuts to essential services and programs, and to oppose what organizers describe as “the most brazen power grab in modern history”.56
Protests are scheduled to take place in multiple cities across the United States and internationally on April 5, 2025. These events aim to demonstrate mass opposition to the Trump administration’s policies and the Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk.25 The protests are organized by various groups including Indivisible, MoveOn, and Third Act, and are expected to draw large crowds in cities such as Atlanta, Detroit, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and San Francisco.15
The protests are focused on a variety of issues including healthcare, Social Security, civil rights, education, and consumer protections. Organizers emphasize the importance of nonviolent action and de-escalation during the protests.35
In addition to the U.S., protests are also planned in other countries, such as Toronto, where Democrats Abroad is organizing a march against the perceived threats to democracy and public services.8
The movement aims to send a clear message that the government and economy should not be exploited for the benefit of a few billionaires, and that citizens are mobilizing to protect their rights and services.58
These events are part of a larger effort to build an opposition movement against what organizers see as the looting of the country’s best values and the destruction of government and economy for the benefit of Trump and his billionaire allies.
On Saturday, April 5, 2025, Third Act joins the Hands Off! National Day of Action to stand up against those who believe they can take whatever they want—our democracy, our future, our rights.
Donald Trump and Elon Musk think this country belongs to them. They’re grabbing everything they can, and it’s up to us to push back. On April 5th, we’ll take to the streets with a clear message: Hands off!
Third Act is proud to partner in this effort alongside Indivisible, MoveOn, and other groups.
Our role is to bring the power and wisdom of elders to this movement, making sure our voices are heard loud and clear. Our goal is to promote and mobilize attendance at these events happening across the country. There are a variety of ways that volunteers and Working Groups can be involved: host an event, promote participation in an event hosted by others, or simply share the sign-up page to the website.
Third Act brings a unique and powerful perspective to this movement. As elders, we have lived through history, fought for democracy, defended Social Security, and marched for the environment. Our presence at these events reminds the world that we have seen what happens when power goes unchecked—and we refuse to let history repeat itself. By showing up and speaking out, we bring credibility, experience, and an unshakable commitment to protecting the future for generations to come.

“Experienced Americans” are the fastest-growing part of the population: 10,000 people a day pass the 60-year mark. That means that there’s no way to make the changes that must be made to protect our planet and society unless we bring our power into play.
We’re used to thinking that humans grow more conservative as they age, perhaps because we have more to protect, or simply because we’re used to things the way they are. But our generations saw enormous positive change early in our lives—the civil rights movement, for instance, or the fight to end massive wars or guarantee the rights of women. And now we fear that the promise of those changes may be dying, as the planet heats and inequality grows.
But as a generation we have unprecedented skills and resources that we can bring to bear. Washington and Wall Street have to listen when we speak, because we vote and because we have a large—maybe an overlarge—share of the country’s assets. And many of us have kids and grandkids and great grandkids: we have, in other words, very real reasons to worry and to work.
Of course this is all completely ‘ORGANIC’ – just disenfranchised people coming together, by happenstance, right?

On April 5, 2025, “Hands Off” demonstrations took place in cities across the United States and in several international locations. The protests were organized to oppose the policies and actions of U.S. President Donald Trump and his advisor, Elon Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Protesters gathered in more than 1,200 locations in all 50 U.S. states and in cities worldwide, including London, Paris, Berlin, and Lisbon, Portugal. The demonstrations were the largest single-day protests against the Trump administration since he took office.
In Washington, D.C., tens of thousands of protesters assembled on the National Mall to voice their discontent over the administration’s sweeping executive actions and restructuring led by Musk’s DOGE. Protesters in other major U.S. cities, such as Chicago, Boston, and New York City, also joined the rallies, with thousands turning out in each location.67 International protests included around 200 demonstrators in Paris, who held signs with messages like “Resist Tyrant,” “Rule of Law,” and “Feminists for Freedom not Fascism”.
The protests were largely peaceful, with organizers aiming for a significant impact on public opinion and policy. Protesters cited grievances ranging from social and economic issues to concerns about the erosion of democratic norms and the abuse of power. The White House defended the administration’s actions, stating that President Trump would always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries.
Protesters expressed their concerns about the future of democracy, the economy, and civil rights, with many holding signs and chanting slogans like “Hands Off Democracy” and “Stop being Putin’s puppet”.57 The demonstrations were seen as a response to Trump and Musk’s perceived hostile takeover and attack on American rights and freedoms.
